Sikkim is set to receive Rs 165 crore for the development of two important tourism infrastructure projects under the Government of India’s Rs 3,295 crore initiative. This program is designed to enhance the tourism sector across 23 states, aiming to improve infrastructure, attract more visitors, and promote local culture. The funds will be allocated through the Scheme of Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), focusing on creating world-class facilities and fostering sustainable tourism development.
1. Skywalk Project in South Sikkim
One of the key initiatives is the development of a Skywalk at Bhaleydunga, Yangang, Namchi in South Sikkim. With a budget of Rs 97.37 crore, this project will create a 240-meter-long glass-bottom Skywalk, located at an altitude of 3,200 meters. Visitors will access the Skywalk via a 3.5-kilometer ropeway, which will offer panoramic views of the surrounding Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary and Bhaleydunga Peak.
In addition to the Skywalk, the project will also include the construction of a funicular, supporting facilities, and contribute to the development of eco-tourism. This project is expected to generate 61 local jobs, contributing to the local economy and positioning Sikkim as a prominent eco-tourism destination.
2. Infrastructure Enhancement at Nathula Pass
The second major project is focused on enhancing infrastructure at Nathula Pass, a critical point on the India-China border. This project will receive Rs 68.19 crore to improve the overall tourist experience. It aims to alleviate congestion by expanding parking spaces and adding essential facilities such as tourist information centers and recreational amenities.
The development of these facilities will not only make the region more accessible but also create 30 local jobs, supporting the growing number of tourists visiting this strategically important location.
Impact on Sikkim’s Tourism and Local Communities
These investments are expected to significantly boost Sikkim’s tourism sector. The new infrastructure will not only enhance the appeal of Sikkim as an eco-tourism hub but also provide sustainable economic opportunities for the local communities. The initiatives will help attract both domestic and international visitors, increasing tourism revenue and supporting local businesses.
In conclusion, the Rs 165 crore allocation for these tourism projects is poised to transform Sikkim into a leading destination for eco-tourism, contributing to its economic growth and improving the overall tourist experience.
