Iconic Hat from Temple of Doom Sold in Los Angeles

The distinctive fedora worn by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom has been sold for a remarkable $630,000 (£487,000) at an auction in Los Angeles. This brown felt hat, specifically crafted for the 1984 film, gained fame for its role in a dramatic scene where Indiana Jones and his team escape from a crashing plane.

Provenance and Features of the Fedora

The hat, which was also used during additional filming at George Lucas’s visual effects facilities, was originally part of the collection of Dean Ferrandini, Ford’s stunt double. The sale included previously unpublished photos of Ferrandini wearing the hat on set.

Crafted by the Herbert Johnson Hat Company in London, the fedora features a more tapered crown than its predecessor from Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is distinguished by gold monogrammed initials “IJ” on the interior.

Other Auction Highlights

Other notable items from the auction included:

  • An imperial scout trooper helmet from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, which sold for $315,000 (£243,000).
  • A light-up wand from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which attracted a winning bid of $53,550 (£41,400).
  • A suit worn by Daniel Craig in Skyfall, which sold for $35,000 (£27,000).

Auction Success and Historical Context

Brandon Alinger, Chief Operating Officer of Propstore, expressed pride in the auction’s success, emphasizing its role in connecting fans with their beloved pieces of film history. The Indiana Jones fedora sold for more than double the price of another Temple of Doom hat auctioned in 2021, which fetched $300,000 (£232,000).
