Infosys Limited is an Indian multinational technology company that offers information technology, business consulting, and outsourcing services. Founded in 1981 by seven engineers, the company is headquartered in Bengaluru and considered one of the Big Six Indian IT companies.

History

[edit]

Infosys was founded on 2 July 1981 in Pune by N. R. Narayana Murthy and six co-founders with an initial capital of just $250. The company began as Infosys Consultants Private Limited and later moved its headquarters to Bengaluru in 1983. During its early years, Infosys briefly experimented with hardware products but soon focused on software services, especially after India’s economic liberalization in 1991 boosted the IT industry.
In 1993, Infosys launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO), marking a major turning point in its growth journey. In 1999, it became the first Indian company to list on Nasdaq, increasing its global visibility. During the late 1990s, Infosys launched major products like Finacle, a core banking software solution, and established its research division, later known as Infosys Labs.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Infosys expanded globally by opening offices in the United States, Europe, and Asia. It launched subsidiaries such as Infosys BPM, Infosys Consulting, and EdgeVerve Systems. By 2021, Infosys became the fourth Indian company to reach a $100 billion market capitalization, solidifying its position as a global IT leader.
