History
[edit]Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) was founded in 1931 as Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Company in India. The company initially focused on producing vanaspati (hydrogenated vegetable oil). In 1956, after merging with other Unilever group companies operating in India, it was renamed Hindustan Lever Limited. In 2007, the company officially changed its name to Hindustan Unilever Limited to reflect its strong connection with its parent company, Unilever.
Over the decades, HUL expanded its product portfolio beyond food items into personal care, home care, and beverages. It established research centers in Mumbai and Bengaluru to strengthen innovation and product development. The company also shifted its headquarters from Lever House in Backbay Reclamation to a modern campus in Andheri, Mumbai.
In 2018, HUL announced a major acquisition of GlaxoSmithKline India’s consumer healthcare business in a multi-billion-dollar all-equity deal. The merger was completed in 2020 after legal approvals. This acquisition strengthened HUL’s presence in the health drink and nutrition segment, further expanding its leadership in India’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.

The company serves over 700 million consumers in India through an extensive distribution network covering urban and rural markets. It runs manufacturing units, research centers, and a strong supply chain system to ensure nationwide availability. HUL also exports products internationally and has been recognized as a major exporter by the Government of India.

Despite facing controversies at different times, HUL has remained financially strong and strategically focused on growth and innovation.
