HCL Technologies Limited is an Indian multinational information technology (IT) consulting company headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Founded by Shiv Nadar, it was spun out in 1991 when HCL entered into the software services business. The company has offices in 60 countries[6] and over 220,000 employees.
History
[edit]HCL Technologies Limited traces its origins to 1976 when a group of eight engineers led by Shiv Nadar founded Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) to manufacture personal computers in India. Initially focused on hardware, the company developed one of India’s first indigenous microcomputers in 1978 and later created advanced software technologies including a relational database management system and networking operating systems. In 1991, as the global IT services industry expanded, HCL Technologies was spun off as a separate entity to focus on software development and technology services, marking its formal entry into the IT consulting and services sector.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, HCL Technologies rapidly expanded its global footprint across the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific markets. The company went public in January 2000, strengthening its capital base for international growth. It diversified into IT infrastructure management services and enterprise solutions, winning major contracts such as building India’s first electronic stock exchange for the National Stock Exchange. Over time, HCL strengthened its capabilities through strategic acquisitions, including UK-based Axon Group in 2008, which significantly expanded its enterprise application services business, and partnerships with global firms such as IBM.
From 2010 onward, HCL continued its transformation into a global technology powerhouse. In 2019, it acquired several software products from IBM and launched its dedicated software division, HCLSoftware. The company also expanded into data analytics through the acquisition of Actian and entered automotive engineering with the purchase of ASAP Group in 2023. In 2022, it rebranded as HCLTech to reflect its modern digital focus. By 2024, HCLTech had operations in 60 countries and over 220,000 employees, becoming the third-largest India-headquartered IT services company by revenue and market capitalization.
