History
[edit]Bharti Airtel was founded on 7 July 1995 by Sunil Mittal. Before entering mobile services, Mittal began in 1984 by assembling push-button phones in India through Bharti Telecom Limited, in collaboration with Siemens AG. In 1992, Bharti won one of the first mobile network licenses in India and launched cellular services in Delhi in 1995 under the brand name Airtel. The company quickly grew and became one of the first Indian telecom operators to cross 2 million subscribers.
During the early 2000s, Airtel expanded rapidly across India through acquisitions such as Spice Cell, Skycell, and Hexacom, and unified all its services under the single Airtel brand in 2003. The company went public in 2002 and became listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange. Airtel also introduced innovative services like “Hello Tunes” and expanded into broadband and digital TV services. By the late 2000s, it had established itself as one of India’s leading telecom providers.
In 2010, Airtel made a historic global move by acquiring the African operations of Zain Group for $10.7 billion, making it one of the largest telecom operators in the world. The company continued expanding into South Asia and Africa, entering countries such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In recent years, Airtel has focused on 4G and 5G expansion, digital services, cloud partnerships with Google Cloud, and collaborations with Nokia and Ericsson to strengthen network infrastructure.
