ACC Limited (formerly The Associated Cement Companies Limited) is an Indian cement producer, headquartered in Mumbai. It is a subsidiary of Ambuja Cements and a part of the Adani Group. On 1 September 2006, the name of The Associated Cement Companies Limited was changed to ACC Limited. The company was established in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 1 August 1936.
History
[edit]ACC Limited was formed in 1936 when eleven cement companies from leading industrial groups such as Tata, Khatau, Killick Nixon, and F. E. Dinshaw merged to create The Associated Cement Companies. Sir Nowroji B. Saklatvala became the first chairman. The initial board included prominent industrialists like J. R. D. Tata, Ambalal Sarabhai, Walchand Hirachand, Dharamsey Khatau, Sir Akbar Hydari, Nawab Salar Jung Bahadur, and Sir Homy Mody. The merger brought together companies such as The Indian Cement Co. Ltd., The Katni Cement and Industrial Co. Ltd., Budhi Portland Cement Ltd., The Okha Cement Co. Ltd., and several others, creating one of India’s earliest large-scale cement enterprises.
Over the decades, ACC expanded its manufacturing network across India, including major plants like the Gagal Cement Works in Himachal Pradesh. In 2004, management control of ACC was acquired by the Swiss cement giant Holcim Group, making ACC part of the global LafargeHolcim group. On 1 September 2006, the company officially changed its name from The Associated Cement Companies Limited to ACC Limited, aligning its identity with global branding trends.
In April 2022, Holcim announced its exit from the Indian market after 17 years, as part of a strategic shift toward core regions. Soon after, on 15 May 2022, the Adani Group acquired Holcim’s stake in ACC and Ambuja Cements for approximately US$10.5 billion. This landmark deal marked a major consolidation in India’s cement industry and positioned Adani Group as one of the country’s leading cement producers.
Operations
[edit]The operations of ACC Limited focus on the manufacturing and marketing of cement and ready-mix concrete across India. The company runs multiple integrated cement plants, grinding units, and bulk cement terminals, supplying products for infrastructure, housing, and commercial construction projects. It produces various types of cement, including Portland cement and blended cement, catering to both retail and institutional customers. With a wide distribution network and technical support services, ACC serves major infrastructure developments such as roads, bridges, dams, and urban construction projects, strengthening its position in India’s building materials sector.
Business career
[edit]The business career of ACC Limited began in 1936 with the merger of eleven regional cement companies, establishing it as one of India’s earliest large-scale cement enterprises. Over the decades, ACC expanded its manufacturing footprint with modern plants, grinding units, and ready-mix concrete facilities across the country, serving both domestic and infrastructure markets. In 2004, it became part of the global Holcim Group, gaining access to international expertise and technology. Following Holcim’s exit in 2022, ACC was acquired by the Adani Group, which continues to drive its growth in India’s cement and construction sectors, consolidating its position as a key player in the industry.
Ideology
[edit]The ideology of ACC Limited centers on building sustainable infrastructure and supporting India’s development through high-quality cement and concrete solutions. The company emphasizes innovation in manufacturing, operational efficiency, and environmental responsibility, aiming to deliver durable and reliable building materials for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. Its philosophy focuses on long-term value creation for stakeholders while contributing to urbanization, industrial growth, and the modernization of India’s construction and infrastructure sectors.
