Kalanithi Maran (born 24 July 1964) is an Indian media entrepreneur and the founder and executive chairman of Sun Group. He built a major media business spanning television, radio, newspapers, direct-to-home services, film production and sports. Sun TV Network, the group’s flagship company, grew from a regional Tamil-language channel into a multi-language broadcaster.

Biography

[edit]

Maran was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, into a family with a long association with public life and publishing. He studied commerce at the University of Madras and later earned an MBA from the University of Scranton in the United States. His exposure to international television markets helped shape his interest in building private broadcasting services for Indian-language audiences.

After returning to India, Maran worked in the family’s publishing business and experimented with video-magazine distribution. On 14 April 1993, he launched Sun TV in Tamil. The channel’s growth coincided with the expansion of satellite television in India and demand for programming in regional languages. Sun TV Network subsequently expanded into additional languages and media formats.

Personal life

[edit]

Maran is married to Kavery Maran, who has held executive responsibilities at Sun TV Network. Their daughter, Kaviya Maran, has also become publicly associated with the family’s sports interests. Maran is the son of Murasoli Maran, a former Union minister, and is related to the political family of M. Karunanidhi. His public profile is principally connected with media and business.

Business career

[edit]

Building Sun Group
Under Maran’s leadership, Sun Group developed a broad portfolio of television channels, FM radio stations, newspapers and magazines, direct-to-home services and film production through Sun Pictures. Sun TV Network became a prominent broadcaster in southern India, with programming in several Indian languages. The company’s listing on Indian stock exchanges in 2006 marked a major milestone in its corporate development.

Film, sports and aviation interests
Sun Pictures has produced and distributed Tamil films, extending the group’s presence into cinema. The Maran family’s sports portfolio includes Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa’s SA20 competition. Maran also held a controlling stake in SpiceJet through KAL Airways before selling his interest in 2015 as part of the airline’s restructuring.

Public influence and legacy

[edit]

Maran’s expansion of Tamil-language television helped demonstrate the commercial potential of regional-language broadcasting in India. His business model combined local programming with distribution across television, radio, print, digital and entertainment properties. His career is frequently discussed in relation to the growth of private media, regional content markets and family-owned conglomerates.
